Джозеф Нідем: биография

У 1950-і рр.. західні вчені критикували Нідема за надмірне, на їхню думку, перебільшення китайських технологічних досягнень. У 1970-і рр.. з-за неприхованою симпатії до режимів КНР і КНДР Нідем був включений урядом США в «чорний список» (персони, присутність яких на території США небажано). Теоретичні роботи Нідема сильно вплинули на творчість вітчизняного синолога А. І. Кобзєва.

Примітні факти

• Роберт ван Гулик стверджував, що саме міркування Нідема про даоської алхімії стали спонукальним мотивом до написання книги «Сексуальне життя в стародавньому Китаї».
• Нідем був двічі одружений: в перший раз на біохімік Дороті Мойл (Dorothy Mary Moyle, 1896-1987). Через два роки після її смерті, він одружився на своїй постійній асистентці і перекладачку з китайської мови - Лу Гуйчжень. Вона померла в 1991 р.
