Throughout his long life, he has been one of the few who always retained a primal glee in the workings of the world, questioning everything that smacked of received wisdom. It is a sad commentary on our times, in which most scientists work as drones in huge, soulless teams, that Lovelock could only find and exercise his freedom to be original by working, precariously, as an independent consultant.
