Біографія
Народився 4 жовтня 1906 року вMontpelier, штат Айдахо. Його батьки (Paul і Louise Sarbach Gertsch) мали швейцарське походження. Навчався в Університеті Юта, де отримав ступінь бакалавра (1928) і магістра (1930). Протягом двох років готував дисертацію в Університеті Міннесоти (University of Minnesota).
